Mutual fund distribution in Assam

Direct answer

PSS Ventures is an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor headquartered in Guwahati, Assam. We serve the Brahmaputra valley in person and the Barak valley remotely, transact on BSE StAR MF, and onboard investors paperlessly through CKYC and DigiLocker. No advisory fees; trail commission from the AMC only.

What is actually different about investing in Assam

Assam is where this business is actually based, and it is the only state where we have an advisor who will meet you in a room. That distinction runs through everything on this page: Guwahati gets a resident advisor, upper Assam and the Barak valley get the same named person over video, and we would rather write that down than list three addresses we do not have. Assam is also the North East's only genuinely deep mutual fund market — the AMC service centres, the bank distribution desks and the investor base are concentrated here in a way they are nowhere else in the region.

The thing that most changes what advice is correct in Assam is not the market, it is the Sixth Schedule. Part I of the table to paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule lists three Assam districts — North Cachar Hills, Karbi Anglong and the Bodoland Territorial Area District — and the Scheduled Tribe exemption, now Schedule III serial 19 read with section 11 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 and previously section 10(26) of the 1961 Act, excludes from total income the income of a member of a Scheduled Tribe residing in those areas from a source in the specified areas. Assam is not named as a State in the provision, which is why it reaches only part of the state. For an investor that applies to, the standard Indian tax-saving conversation — ELSS to fill Section 80C, an extra Rs 50,000 into NPS under 80CCD(1B) — is arguing about a deduction against tax that may not be owed. For the majority of Assam investors, in Kamrup and the valley districts, it is not applicable and the ordinary calculus holds. Which of those two you are in is a question about your own status and your own source of income, and it is a question for a chartered accountant, not for a distributor's website.

What we see in practice across the state splits by geography rather than by product. Guwahati investors arrive with a specific goal and a rough number — a house deposit, a child's college, an 80C gap they discovered in February. Upper Assam — Dibrugarh, Jorhat, the tea and oil belt — skews toward salaried professionals and small-business owners with a longer horizon and less prior exposure to equity. The Barak valley is Bengali-speaking, a day's road travel from Guwahati, and historically served by whoever happened to be visiting; continuity is the thing that has been missing there rather than access.

Access itself has not been the constraint for years. The BSE StAR MF rail carries any AMC's schemes to any Indian investor with a PAN and a bank account, CKYC fetch works identically in Silchar and in Mumbai, and UPI AutoPay made SIP mandate registration a phone-app operation. What has been missing in most of Assam is the second half — the named person who is still there in year four when you want to pause a SIP, change a nominee, or work out whether to redeem. That is the gap a local distributor is actually for, and it is the only thing we claim to be better at.

On what we do not do here: we are an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor and nothing else. Corporate fixed deposits, insurance and listed bonds are lead-only on this site, routed to partners under the relevant licence, and we say so on each of those pages. We are not a SEBI Investment Adviser, we charge no advisory fee, and we earn trail commission from the AMC on Regular-plan transactions — which is disclosed on every scheme page alongside an estimate of what the Direct plan would have cost you instead.

Questions we get from Assam investors

Which cities in Assam do you publish pages for?

Guwahati today, with Dibrugarh and Silchar written and in review. We publish a city page when there is enough genuinely local material to justify one and a named advisor who covers it — not when the city exists. Jorhat and Tezpur are tracked and unpublished for exactly that reason.

Do you have an office outside Guwahati?

No. Our advisor for Assam sits in Guwahati on weekdays. Investors elsewhere in the state are served by the same named person over video and phone. We do not list addresses in cities where we have no premises.

Does the Sixth Schedule affect my mutual fund taxation in Assam?

It can, but only through the Scheduled Tribe exemption — Schedule III serial 19 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, previously section 10(26) of the 1961 Act — and only for a member of a Scheduled Tribe residing in one of the three Sixth Schedule districts listed in Part I, with income from a source in the specified areas. It is a question about your individual status, not about the fund. Confirm your own position with a chartered accountant before planning around it.

Can I invest from Assam without visiting a branch?

Yes. CKYC fetch by PAN, DigiLocker eKYC and video KYC complete the onboarding from a phone anywhere in the state. Transactions run on BSE StAR MF; SIP mandates run on UPI AutoPay. Nothing about the mechanics requires you to be in a particular city.

Which languages do you work in across Assam?

Assamese, Hindi and English with our Guwahati advisor. Written documentation — statements, contract notes, scheme documents — is in English, which is the BSE and AMFI standard and not something a distributor can change.
