Fixed Deposits in Guwahati — what's actually different here
Guwahati's bank FD culture is deep — generations of investors have parked surpluses in SBI, UCO Bank, and the regional Assam Co-operative Apex Bank. The conversation we have most often with first-time non-bank-FD investors is the credit-quality one: a 'corporate FD at 8.5%' from an unrated NBFC is not a substitute for a bank FD at 7%. We only shortlist AAA-rated corporate FDs from issuers like Bajaj Finance, HDFC (now part of HDFC Bank), Shriram Finance, Mahindra Finance — and we walk the investor through the rating before any callback is booked.
When a corporate FD makes sense for a Guwahati investor: senior citizens looking for predictable income above the bank-FD rate (the corporate-FD premium is typically 50–125 bps for AAA-rated paper), or someone with a 1–3 year goal who wants zero equity exposure but doesn't want to lock in long-tenor bonds. Bank FDs remain the default for shorter parking and for anyone uncomfortable parsing issuer ratings.
On taxation: corporate FD interest is fully taxable at your slab rate, with TDS deducted by the issuer if interest in a year exceeds Rs 5,000 (Rs 50,000 for senior citizens per the FY24 Budget). This often makes corporate FDs uncompetitive vs debt mutual funds for investors in the 30% slab — but the SEBI mutual-fund taxation regime changed in April 2023 (indexation benefit removed for debt funds bought after that date), narrowing the gap. Run a post-tax comparison; never an headline rate comparison.
On DICGC: bank FDs are insured up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank under DICGC. Corporate FDs are not — they sit on the issuer's balance sheet. The AAA rating is your only protection. Lower-rated corporate FDs (AA, A, BBB) carry materially higher default risk and should not be in a retiree's core portfolio regardless of headline yield.
Why this is a lead-only product on our site in MVP: PSS Ventures is an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor; corporate FD distribution is regulated under a separate framework (issuer-empanelled channels). We are working on the right partner empanelment so we can transact end-to-end. Until then, a callback to discuss the shortlist is what we offer — followed by a hand-off to the issuer's authorised channel for the actual deposit booking.
Local case study
A 64-year-old retiree in Guwahati looking to ladder corporate FDs
A 64-year-old recently-retired Guwahati teacher came in with Rs 12 lakh from a maturing LIC endowment, wanting Rs 8 lakh in fixed income and Rs 4 lakh in a hybrid mutual fund for inflation protection. We shortlisted a ladder of three AAA-rated corporate FDs (1-year, 2-year, 3-year, ~50–80 bps over the bank-FD rate) and a hybrid balanced advantage fund for the equity slice. The investor walked into the issuer's authorised channel for the FD bookings; the hybrid SIP was set up paperlessly the same day.

FAQs from Guwahati investors
Are corporate fixed deposits safe for a Guwahati investor?⌃
Only AAA-rated corporate FDs from issuers with long track records (Bajaj Finance, HDFC, Shriram Finance, Mahindra Finance) carry credit risk that retail investors can reasonably hold. Lower-rated corporate FDs are not a substitute for bank FDs even at higher headline yields. Corporate FDs are not DICGC-insured.
What's the difference between a bank FD and a corporate FD?⌃
Bank FDs are insured up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank by DICGC; corporate FDs are not. Bank FDs are typically 50–125 bps lower in yield than AAA-rated corporate FDs of similar tenor. Bank FDs can be opened directly through any branch in Guwahati; corporate FDs go through the issuer's authorised channels.
Will PSS Ventures help me open a corporate FD in Guwahati?⌃
Yes — at the shortlist + callback stage. We do not yet transact end-to-end on corporate FDs (we are an AMFI MFD; corporate FD distribution sits under a separate empanelment we are working on). After the callback we hand off to the issuer's authorised channel for the actual booking.
Are senior-citizen rates better in Guwahati banks?⌃
Most banks offer a 25–50 bps premium for senior citizens (60+); some offer an additional 25 bps for super-seniors (80+). The TDS threshold for senior citizens was raised from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 in the FY24 Budget — interest below that is paid without TDS.
Is the FD interest tax-free?⌃
No. FD interest (bank or corporate) is fully taxable at your slab rate. Senior citizens get a Section 80TTB deduction of up to Rs 50,000 on bank FD interest. There is no equivalent for corporate FD interest.
