IIM and top-tier MBA cost evolution
An IIM 2-year MBA cost approximately ₹6 lakh in 2005, ₹25 lakh in 2020, and ₹30-35 lakh in 2025 — a 12-13% CAGR over 20 years. ISB costs are similar to IIMs A/B/C; XLRI clusters slightly lower. International equivalents (INSEAD, LBS) cost USD 100-150K.
MBA programmes inflate faster than undergraduate engineering, in part because of brand premium and competition for the top placements. Plan accordingly — assume the higher end of the inflation band (9-10%) for MBA planning.
MBA is usually self-funded via loan + savings, not parental funding
Most MBA students fund a meaningful portion via education loans, paid back from the (high) post-MBA salary. The parental contribution typically covers 30-60% of the cost. Plan the SIP for the parental share, not the full cost.
If your child is 4-7 years old today, you have 15-18 years of accumulation runway — enough to fund the full cost via a moderate SIP if you start early.
Don't commingle MBA fund with undergrad fund
Undergrad and MBA are separate goals with different timing (undergrad at 18, MBA at 24-26). Keep them in separate folios or separately-tracked SIPs — otherwise you'll deplete the MBA fund for undergrad costs.
