Engineering in IndiaChild Education Calculator

Engineering in India costs ₹4-30 lakh depending on the institution. At 9% education inflation, a degree that costs ₹12 lakh today costs roughly ₹44 lakh in 15 years. To fund it via SIP, you need approximately ₹8,800/month at a 12% return assumption — start when your child is born for maximum compounding benefit.

INSIGHTAt 9% education inflation, a ₹12.00 L programme today will cost ₹43.71 L in 15 years. A ₹8.7 K/mo SIP at 12% gets you there. A one-time ₹7.99 L invested today is the alternative.
Education inflation historically outpaces headline CPI. Building a 10–15% buffer over the projected cost is prudent — exchange-rate moves can swing abroad-degree costs sharply.

The wide cost band in Indian engineering

Government engineering colleges (IITs, NITs, IIITs, state universities) charge ₹50,000-2 lakh per year — total 4-year cost ₹2-8 lakh including hostel. Private engineering universities charge ₹2-7 lakh per year — total cost ₹8-30 lakh. Top-tier private universities (BITS, VIT, Manipal, SRM) cluster around ₹15-25 lakh total.

Plan for the higher band of what your child is realistically aiming for. Over-saving leaves a buffer that can fund post-graduate education; under-saving leaves you scrambling for an education loan at the wrong moment.

Education inflation is real and persistent

MoSPI's CPI-Education sub-index has run at 6-8% in most post-2010 years. Private engineering institutions raise fees aggressively — 8-10% per year is the standard planning assumption. IIT fees themselves have risen from ₹50K/year in 2008 to ₹2.5 L/year today — a 9-10% CAGR.

Use 9% as the default inflation assumption for India-engineering planning. Use 10% if you're planning for a premium private institution.

Don't forget JEE / NEET coaching costs

Coaching for entrance exams is a separate cost — typically ₹2-5 lakh for 2 years of full-time JEE / NEET coaching at a tier-1 centre. Build this into the plan as a year-T-minus-2 expense.

FAQ

How much will an IIT/NIT engineering degree cost in 2040?
At ~9% education inflation, a degree that costs Rs 12 lakh today will cost roughly Rs 44 lakh in 15 years — and private engineering colleges typically run 2–3x that. Plan for the higher band.

How matching works

  1. Enter years to college start. Count from today to the year college begins. Add 1 year buffer for entrance prep and gap.
  2. Estimate today's full course cost. Use the high end of what you'd accept. Easier to over-save than to scramble.
  3. Set an education inflation rate. 9% for India, 8% for abroad (the FX drag is captured separately if you're planning USD).
  4. Pick a return assumption. 12% for a >10 year horizon. Reduce to 10% for shorter horizons that need an early glide path.
  5. Get a goal-mapped plan. Request a callback; we'll set up the SIP and a calendar glide path so you derisk in time.
